PoliticsLuis Miguel: We Will Not Allow BLM & Antifa to Terrorize St. Johns County

August 27, 2020

A statement by Luis Miguel, local Republican leader, conservative writer, and community activist, regarding surging political violence by anarchist revolutionary groups.

As I meet with the residents of our beloved St. Johns County, I see a growing concern among our community.

I see parents who witness the nightly mob violence in places like Portland and fear for the wellbeing of their families.

I see business owners who watch the unbridled looting and arson in other cities and fear that their lifetime’s worth of hard work could be gone in an instant.

And I see concerned citizens who fear that speaking out against it all will get them doxed by nefarious character assassins, putting their livelihoods and safety in jeopardy.

Let me make one thing clear to every person thinking about bringing their problems here: St. Johns has no shortage of fighting patriots with a zero tolerance policy for those who want to come into our neighborhoods and upset our peaceful way of life with their violent political agenda.

We will uphold the Constitutions of the United States and of the State of Florida. As such, we will always protect our citizens’ First Amendment right to freedom of speech, even if their views are different from our own.

But vandalizing historical monuments is not free speech. Robbing department stores blind is not free speech. Setting churches and federal buildings ablaze is not free speech.

I support peaceful protests. The right to peacefully petition government is one of the essential principles on which our nation was founded.

But if you’re on a spree of destroying public and private property, you are not a peaceful protester. If you’re throwing fireworks and molotov cocktails at police officers and fellow residents, you are not a peaceful protester—and your activities will come to a swift end.

In other states, anarchist groups freely roam the streets in droves at night while law-abiding citizens remain locked in their homes, too afraid to go out. This is often due to the poor decision-making of partisan government leaders who hinder their police from fulfilling their duties.

But here, criminals who seek to cloak their lawlessness under the guise of social justice should be prepared to encounter resistance not only from law enforcement, but from the citizenry itself.

What we’re seeing across the country is a push by Marxist forces who want police out of the way so that they can intimidate and bully without reprisal. Dangerous anarchists are driving protests and riots, using them as cover to commit violence without scrutiny from the media or politicians—all with the aim of radically transforming our society into one big communist gulag.

This is completely antithetical to the republican tradition enshrined in our Constitution. And it is antithetical to the freedom we hold dear.

Antifa is one of the chief instigators of the mayhem that now consumes many American cities. We have seen in a number of cases that when conflict has erupted between protesters and police, it has often been due to agitational Antifa who embed themselves in demonstrations for the purpose of sowing unrest.

It is no surprise that the New Jersey Department of Homeland Security designated Antifa a domestic terror organization in 2017 and that the president has signaled he wants to take similar action federally.

Willem van Spronsen, who firebombed a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement center in Tacoma, Washington last year, was openly Antifa and a member of the socialist John Brown Gun Club, an affiliate of the Marxist group Redneck Revolt.

These and similar organizations should heed our warning: This is not Portland. This is not Seattle. This is not Chicago. In St. Johns County, your antics will not be welcome. Get with the program or get out.

We are a peaceful, freedom-loving people. But we will use all the force necessary to preserve that peace.
